Despite the economy coming to a stall and the weather staying at seasonal normals, there has been a record breaking increase in the usage of electricity.
People on the streets have started to make complaints on why the country hasn’t adopted the winter time schedule. Students and people who have to start the day early express their discomfort about the situation whenever they can.
Barış Yarkadaş, who dragged the issue to the Parliament have said “The current situation regarding the alteration of the time is having psychological effects on the society and detrimental effects on the economy.”
Electrical Engineers Chamber’s (EEC) assessment using statistical analysis have proved that staying on the summer time schedule instead of adopting the winter time has caused a waste in energy consumption.
‘This obstinacy can’t continue’
Yarkadaş, who evaluated the situation have made this statement:
“This practice has had detrimental effects on the economy. Because of it, many students as well as people who have to get up early to go to work are forced to leave their homes before the sun rises. Just because we are starting the day and hour early does NOT mean we are economizing. If this continues, we will face problems regarding finance, sports, tourism, transportation and health in the following stages of this alteration.
What we have said have also been proven by EEC’s scientific and technical data. I wish the government which is turning a blind eye to what we’re saying, would take a minute to check the data produced through the studies conducted by the EEC. These kinds of subjects are NOT open for obstinacy. They directly affect 79 million citizens who live in this country, both economically and psychologically.”
‘Electrical Engineers Chamber has clarified’
Yarkadaş has drawn attention to the data produced by the EEC and said:
“The EEC has conducted a study focusing on TEİAŞ’s statistics on usage of electricity. According to the study; abandoning the winter time schedule has created an even greater consumption.
Taking into account the consumption rates of the last 5 years, the usage of electricity has increased by 6.5 percent and set a new record of electricity consumption by 22.7 billion kilowatt hours.
According to prior data, the electricity consumption for the month of November between years 2012-2015 have been; 20.3 billion kilowatt hours, 20 billion kilowatt hours, 21 billion kilowatt hours, 21.3 billion kilowatt hours accordingly. The record-breaking 6.5 percent increase in consumption of this years November was only around 1.35 percent last year.
Since there has been a drop in electricity consumption in year 2013; there has been a comparable increase in 2014. Even then, the increase was only around 4.8 percent unlike 6.5 percent now.
‘Annual consumption have increased’
“Since the winter time schedule has NOT been adopted, the overall annual consumption has also increased. According to the data, in year 2015 between the months January-October 221.2 billion kilowatt hours of electricity has been used; when looked at this years data however, 227 billion kilowatt hours of electricity has been used within the same time period, increasing by 2.63 percent compared to last year. Adding the consumption rate in November of 2016 alone, the percentile increase has become 4.09 overall.
All of the data suggests that the increase in electricity consumption within the month of November is manipulative.
The government should immediately abandon this practice which creates difficulty for citizens, hardship in international communications and overall waste in electricity consumption.”
