Before journalists, Aslı Erdoğan and Necmiye Alpay’s trial, CHP Member of Parliament Barış Yarkadaş has called out to the public. He said “650 journalists’ twitter accounts are being investigated. Stop these nonsensical investigations.”
Members of Parliament from CHP Barış Yarkadaş, Sezgin Tanrıkulu and Selina Doğan have arrived at the Çağlayan Courthouse to observe Aslı Erdoğan and Necmiye Alpay’s trial.
Barış Yarkadaş, who is also one of CHP’s media commission members, said “As we are approaching the final days of the year, we are once again witnessing a dark day.”
Yarkadaş continued with the words:
“While on our way to the courthouse to observe the trials of Aslı Erdoğan, Necmiye Alpay, İnan Kızılkaya and many journalists alike, it was brought to our attention that another journalist friend of ours, Ahmet Şık, was also taken into custody over a tweet.
Although we have started the day with the wishes that Aslı Erdoğan, Necmiye Alpay, İnan Kızılkaya and other journalists would re-attain their freedoms, we see that other journalists are already being targeted, arrested, or taken into custody.”
Reminding the public that Aslı Erdoğan and Necmiye Alpay have been in jail for 5 months Yarkadaş said, “Today, after 132 days, our friends are finally appearing before the judge. They will be tried due to their writings that do NOT constitute any form of crime according to the Turkish Penal Code. We NEITHER find it licit, NOR do we accept any journalist to be tried, arrested or taken into custody, based on their opinions.”
Yarkadaş argued that, journalists and the intelligentsia are tried be oppressed before a possible referendum, and said:
“Look, according to the information I have received, they are investigating not only Ahmet Şık but also 650 journalists over the messages they have tweeted. It is also being said that during the referendum period, these journalists are going to be taken into custody, sometimes one-by-one and sometimes in larger clusters. Additionally, according to the statement of the Ministry of Interior, there are ten thousand ongoing investigations over tweets…
This is called disregarding freedom of thought and expression; threatening the public; discouraging the intelligentsia; and intimidating the society.
Today we hope our journalist friends regain their freedoms. We suggest an end to all the nonsensical investigations against 650 other journalists. We firmly believe that these threats against journalists should come to a halt. We hope that the rain today would bring our people democracy and freedom.”
