CHP Istanbul Deputy Barış Yarkadaş said, “With the last executive order, the partisan media was pushed outside of the supervision circle. From now on, they will not even allow the opposition’s voice to be heard for a single minute on their TV channels, as the principle of equality has been destroyed.”
With the executive order No. 687 that was passed yesterday midnight, the principle that radios and TV’s “give equal air-time to political parties” has been abolished.
This way, the partisan media outlets could air government propaganda for 24 straight hours in a day without encountering any sort of supervision.
CHP Istanbul Deputy Barış Yarkadaş who reacted to the ‘midnight executive order’ stated that the executive orders have started to go beyond their purpose to fight off FETÖ.
Yarkadaş continued with the words:
“They are enacting executive orders at midnight while people are asleep. They include a law regarding a winter-tire fine to the same executive order to deceive people. What does the winter-tire practice has to do with the fight against FETÖ?”
Look, with the ‘midnight executive order’ No. 298 of Law on Basic Provisions of Elections’, article 149/A is being abolished.
Based on the abolished article, TV’s and radio’s can air the election as much as they please, without any supervision from YSK(The Supreme Election Committee). The explanation to this is:
The opposition is going to be suppressed to an even greater extent with the power of broadcasting en route to the referendum; any insult or slander against the opposition would be easily made through partial media outlets.
The article that was abolished with the executive order, stated that YSK held the right to prohibit broadcasting of any TV or radio channels if they didn’t comply with the rudiments. The abolishment of this article foreshadows the dimensions of AKP’s referendum campaign. A limitless broadcast with no YSK supervision.
This is an unprecedented event. The elimination of supervision will bring lawlessness with itself. The principle of pluralism that constitutes democracy will be put away and only the governments one-sided propaganda will be spread. Citizens’ right to evaluate and select; compare and elect will be bereaved.
The partisan media have become allowed to not broadcast any of the oppositions efforts. Since the supervision mechanism has been destroyed, their obligation to provide air-time to opposition parties has been lifted.
Apparently, the AKP government isn’t satisfied with holding only 85 percent of the media outlets in its’ hands; thence they made such decision.
With this change, the provision that oversees that private radio and TV channels must provide air-time equally to every political party, is being lifted.
From now on, the partisan media is allowed to propagandize AKP even at the ballots once we go there to vote.
Apparently; the number of ‘YES’ votes doesn’t please the government… For this reason, they want limitles propaganda. These unlawful executive orders or their TV’s and radios will not be able to save them. The plan to win the referendum by stifling the opposition with the power of media will remain a dream to the government.”
