CHP Istanbul Deputy Barış Yarkadaş stated that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan must prove his accusations against the journalists.
CHP’s journalist Deputy Barış Yarkadaş indicated that President Erdoğan’s latest statements regarding the journalists, are suppressing the justice system.
Yarkadaş who visited the artisans in Ümraniye alonsgside CHP Istanbul Provincial Head Cemal Canpolat and District Head Cafer Aktürk for the referendum campaign, has shared his reactions over social media. Yarkadaş said:
“They are assassinating people’s reputation”
“President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that the arrested journalists are either “terrorists” or “thieves”. I wonder what list President Erdoğan looked at? If you are calling journalists who have been in the field for decades terrorists, you have to prove it. The government is in your hands, the police, the prosecutors and the judges are in your command! If the detained journalist friends of ours have committed a crime, put forth what they are being accused of…
This is a great chance for you to prove what you are alleging! Our friends from Cumhuriyet Newspaper are detained for the past 143 days, yet there isn’t a single imputation about them who have been arrested with directives. There isn’t a single proof for their crimes. The prosecutor can’t even prepare a bill of indictment for the Cumhuriyet Newspaper writers. Apparently, he can’t find anything to write on those bills.
And for this reason, 149 journalists, including Cumhuriyet journalists, are being punished unjustly and unlawfully just because they criticized the government. Are Murat Aksoy, Atilla Taş, Kadri Gürsel, Akın Atalay, Tunca Öğreten, Mahir Kanaat terrorists? Are many of our friends whose names we can’t count one-by-one thieves? There is no proof, no evidence, no indictments; there is non-proven ACCUSATION! The discrediting of the journalists has to stop, our colleagues must be released immediately. Erdoğan should stop targeting the journalists.
In fact, with this last statement, the justice system has once again been taken under suppression. Erdoğan has simply pointed the journalists in prison as targets for prosecutors and judges. This attitude is nothing but suppressing and influencing the judiciary. Erdoğan has overshadowed all of the proceedings. The suppression of the prosecutors and judges openly, would only lengthen the process in which journalists are being detained in prison.
Erdoğan must accept the fact that, tweeting, publishing newspapers and commenting, are not crimes. Turkey has been turned into a hell for journalists. The government who sees every opposing idea as a crime, is carrying more fire to this hell everyday. Journalists, intellectuals, writers, artists are experiencing hell on earth due to the government. It’s as if journalists are being executed.
Now, as if all of these aren’t enough; they are facing discreditable accusations that they are no part of. The ones who are trying to clear their names as “the government who imprisons journalists”, can’t do it though these nonsensical allegations. I am saying it one more time; stop assassinating people’s reputation!
If you have proof, put it in the bills of indictment and prove your allegations! Don’t suppress the judiciary; don’t give them directives! STOP PERCEIVING JOURNALISM AS A CRIME! Put up with the criticisms! If you have no proof; and we know you don’t; apologize to the public and to the the journalists immediately….
Don’t think that the journalists who have been imprisoned unjustly are unprotected. They haven’t committed any crimes, they are persecuted because they simply expressed their thoughts. The justice system will one day reveal this and President Erdoğan and the AKP government will take their place within the pages of history as the actors of this era in which the most number of journalists have been detained and suppressed.”
